Doc Severinsen Information
Carl Hilding "Doc" Severinsen is an American jazz trumpeter born in Arlington, Oregon. Severinsen's dad was a violinist who encouraged him to take up the instrument, but Severinsen had his heart set on the trombone instead.
He had to settle for the cornet because his arms weren't long enough for the trombone, and there were none in stock at the tiny Arlington music store. His father, tobacco in mouth, showed him the basics of playing while a neighbor taught him to spit the notes like he was chewing tobacco. If he didn't get in some practice, his mom would spank him.
Severinsen already demonstrated musical talent; by the time he was seven years old, he was playing in a high school band. He won a state trumpet competition when he was nine, played in an all-star band spanning many states when he was thirteen and tried out for Tommy Dorsey when he was fourteen but was ultimately rejected. He founded a jazz quartet, the Blue Notes, and played at community events and dances.
He joined the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra's touring band before finishing high school. Soon after finishing college, he hit the road with jazz greats Charlie Barnet, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman. During WWII, he was an active member of the Army. Between the years 1946 and 1951, Severinsen played in Sam Donahue's band. He made his radio debut with KODL in 1946, performing on trumpet.
