Taylor Austin James (May 15, 1987) is an American MC and DJ. He is professionally known by his stage name DJ Tay James. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Columbia, Maryland. He saw DJ Scribble on MTV when he was twelve years old, and his father got him a pair of turntables for Christmas. He began DJing parties for his sister and friends after his brother taught him how to utilize them. He began interning at Unruly Records, a Baltimore-based party music label, when he was 15 years old.
James got paid $300 for DJing a birthday party when he was 16 years old, and he resigned from his job at Burger King to pursue music full-time. He was signed by Unruly Records after graduating from Calvert Hall College High School and began spinning at CD listening parties and clubs.
He studied business management in college and continued to DJ at clubs and events. He went 130 miles round trip on weekends to DJ at Love, a huge club in Washington, DC, which often drew 8,000 people. He DJed birthday parties for Chris Brown and Bow Wow and an afterparty for Beyoncé for three years at Love.
James scratched on Justin Bieber's "Right Here" from the album Believe, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. He and Bieber also collaborated on the 2010 comedy track "Omaha Mall," which was featured in a webisode of We Know the DJ's fifth season.
