DJ Harvey Information
DJ Harvey is a British DJ who joined the Ersatz, a punk band when he was 13 years old and quickly rose to the drummer position. The band's self-released song "Smile in Shadow," played on BBC Radio 1 by John Peel, was issued on the independent label Leisure Sounds. From 1978 to 1983, Ersatz issued albums with Harvey on drums.
While visiting New York City in 1985, Harvey was moved by the burgeoning hip-hop scene. He bought his first set of Technics, brought them home, and started "cutting up" breaks since he saw it as a natural progression from drumming. He was a graffiti writer for the crew originally known as "Tone Deaf Crew" (TDK) but now known as "TONKA Hi-Fi." The organization was responsible for weekend-long parties in Cambridge, Brighton, and London and various festivals. For five years, from 1988 to 1993, the after-hours celebrations in Brighton moved to The Zap Club, and then, once the club shut down at 2 a.m., to the beach at Black Rock.
With the help of American DJs Francois Kevorkian and Kenny Carpenter, he began playing more events in London's clubs like Solaris and Freedom, shifting his focus from hip hop, electro, and disco to house music and garage. In 1991, Harvey was a resident DJ at London's Gardening Club, hosting his weekly night called "Moist." He hosted six-hour mixes of disco, house, garage, and rock records, a sound he has continued through to subsequent residencies, such as at the Hard Left at the Blue Note, and he attracted DJs from New York City and other US cities, including Larry Levan.
