Digable Planets Information
Digable Planets is an award-winning hip hop trio that was formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1987. Current members of this trio are the rappers Craig “Doodlebug” Irving, Mariana “Ladybug Mecca” Butler, and Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler. The group is well-known for their contributions to the subgenres of alternative hip hop and classic hip hop.
Irving and Butler met in the 1980s in Philadelphia. Butler at that time was working at Sleeping Bag Records in New York as an internee. Irving and Vieira met in Washington, D.C. That time, Irving was attending Howard University. Initially, Digable Planets featured only Butler. In 1989, after a brief stint with Irving and Vieira, Butler added both of them to Digable Planets and began performing together.
In 1992, Digable Planets signed a record deal with Pendulum Records. After this contract, all three members of the group went to New York. In 1993, the trio released its debut album entitled “Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space). The album was certified gold by the RIAA. The group released its second album in 1994 entitled “Blowout Comb.” Digable Planets appeared on the compilation album of the Red Hot Organization, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool.
Digable Planets went on a reunion tour in February 2005. The journey began after the release of their another compilation album entitled “Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles.” The album was officially released on October 15, 2005. In 2017, Digable Planets released their live album entitled “Digable Planets Live.”
