Denis Matsuev Information
Denis Leonidovich Matsuev (June 11, 1975) is a Russian classical pianist. Matsuev is the child of two musicians, as his mother is a piano teacher and his father is a pianist and composer; he was born in Irkutsk, Soviet Union. At three, he displayed a musical ear by recreating a melody he heard on television on the piano at home. His father became his first piano teacher as a result. Matsuev studied music in Irkutsk until he was 15 years old. He earned a medal at the "New Names Charitable Foundation" competition in Irkutsk in 1990, and the foundation gave him a stipend of $1,000 per month to study music in Moscow.
Matsuev traveled to Moscow with his parents in 1991 to complete his musical education. He attended the Moscow Conservatory's Central Music School. In 1994, he competed in his first international piano competition, winning the Grand Prix in Johannesburg, South Africa. In the same year, he enrolled in the Moscow Conservatory as Aleksey Nasedkin's student. He studied under Sergei Dorensky after 1997. At the age of 23, Matsuev won the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition.
Matsuev also plays jazz and credits Oscar Peterson as a major influence on his style. Matsuev was the first classical pianist to perform a jazz concert in the Moscow Conservatory's Great Hall. Matsuev was a torchbearer and performed in the closing ceremony of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in February 2014.
