Joshua Evans Turner (May 31, 1992) is better known by his stage name Dem Atlas which is often stylized as deM atlaS. He is an American rapper from St. Paul, Minnesota, born in Akron, Ohio. He moved to Minneapolis at age four and later attended Eagan Senior High School. Turner’s music is defined as alternative hip hop and hip hop. He was listed as one of the "Five Rap Artists to Watch For in 2015" by The Village Voice. Turner is also a member of the group Sifu Hotman alongside producer Rube and rapper Guante. Currently, he is signed to Rhymesayers Entertainment.
Dem Atlas began his official career in 2013 by releasing his debut EP entitled Charle Brown. It was followed by Dr. EP on Rhymesayers Entertainment in 2014. This EP was listed by Pitchfork as one of their "Best MN Hip-Hop Releases of 2014". In that same year, Sifu Hotman released an album entitled Embrace the Sun. "With a Smile" was a single released by Turner in 2015, and in 2016, he released a mixtape, MF Dem, that featured the previous 13 released instrumentals from MF Doom. Bad Actress was another studio album by Turner released in 2018.
Dem Atlas stated in a 2015 interview with Star Tribune that his influences range from Pharcyde to Nas, Bad Brains, Louis Armstrong, Minor Threat, and Billie Holiday. Some of his notable guest appearances include Atmosphere - "Color in the Snow" (2013), Antioch - "Prozac Daytrips" from King of the Forest (2014), Beast head - "Different Son" from Tallest Trees (2013), Doze - "Nice Guys Finish Last" from Pay Dues Forever (2015), and many more.
