David Allan Coe Information
David Allan Coe is a singer and songwriter from Akron, Ohio. As a child, his favorite singer was Johnny Cash. At the age of 9, he attended the Starr Commonwealth For Boys reform school, where Coe spent nearly the next 20 years in correctional facilities, including three years at the Ohio Penitentiary. According to Coe, he received encouragement to begin writing songs from Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who spent time in prison with him. In 1967, he embarked on a music career in Nashville, after concluding his prison term.
Coe lived in a hearse that he parked in front of the Ryman Auditorium. He signed a contract with an independent record label, Plantation Records, after catching their attention. A debut album by Coe was released in early 1970, entitled Penitentiary Blues, followed by a tour with Grand Funk Railroad.
Some of the other notable albums by Coe are Requiem for a Harlequin, The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy, Once Upon a Rhyme, Longhaired Redneck, Human Emotions, Buckstone County Prison (Soundtrack), Nothing Sacred, Compass Point, and many more. In total, he released 42 albums along with 4 Live albums named LIVE: If That Ain't Country..., Live From the Iron Horse Saloon: Biketoberfest '01, Country Outlaw, and Live at Billy Bob's Texas. Whoopsy Daisy is an AudioBook by him that was released in 2002. He also released several compilation albums.
Some of the bibliography by Coe are Just for the Record...the Autobiography, The Book of David, Ex-Convict, Poems, Prose, and Short Stories. Coe is also the father of Tyler Mahan Coe, who created the country music podcast Cocaine & Rhinestones.
