Damon Albarn Information
The English musician, singer-songwriter, and composer Damon Albarn OBE (born March 23, 1968) is best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the rock band Blur and as the co-founder and primary musical contributor for the virtual band Gorillaz.
Albarn went to The Stanway School, where he met guitarist Graham Coxon and founded Blur. He grew up in Leytonstone, East London, and the surrounding area of Colchester, Essex. In 1991, they came out with their first full-length album titled Leisure. Due largely to his time spent on the road in the United States, Albarn's songwriting took on a strong influence from British bands of the '60s. What resulted were the albums by Blur titled Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994), and The Great Escape (1996). Critics praised all three, but Blur's battle with Oasis on the Britpop charts propelled them to mainstream success in the UK. Following this, albums like Blur (1997), 13 (1999), and Think Tank (2003) blended elements of lo-fi, art rock, electronic, and world music into their sound. The Magic Whip (2015), Blur's first studio album in 12 years, followed these.
Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett established the band Gorillaz in 1998. Gorillaz's debut album was self-titled and released in 2001 to worldwide popularity, spawning multiple successful follow-up albums. The band plans to continue releasing albums and touring well into the 2020s. The only constant musical contributor is Albarn.
