Cristian Macelaru Information
Christian Macelaru (March 15, 1980) is a Romanian conductor. In a family of ten, Macelaru is the youngest. He took up the violin when he was young. He pursued his music education at Michigan's Interlochen Center for the Arts. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from U of M in 2003. At age 21, he became the youngest person ever to be a concertmaster with the Miami Symphony Orchestra.
Following his time at Juilliard, Macelaru continued his education in music at Rice University, where he focused on conducting. Larry Rachleff was one of his early role models. While studying at Rice, he also spent two years as a violinist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and led the Houston Youth Orchestra. At the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival, he attended conducting master classes taught by David Zinman, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Oliver Knussen, and Stefan Asbury. He was honored with the Solti Foundation's Emerging Conductor Award in 2012 and its Conducting Award in 2014.
The Philadelphia Orchestra hired Macelaru as an associate conductor in 2011. In 2012, he was appointed associate conductor of the orchestra, which he retained until 2014. Later, from 2014 to 2017, he was the orchestra's conductor-in-residence. Since 2017, Macelaru has been the music director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.
