Cleveland Orchestra Information
The Cleveland Orchestra, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the "Big Five" major American orchestras. The symphony was founded in 1918 by pianist and promoter Adella Prentiss Hughes. It has been called Severance Hall home ever since its inception. Franz Welser-Möst is the current music director of the Cleveland Orchestra.
Adella Prentiss Hughes, John L. Severance, Father John Powers, Archie Bell (a music critic), and Russian-American violinist and conductor Nikolai Sokoloff (the Orchestra's first music director) formed the Cleveland Orchestra as a team. Hughes, a former concert pianist turned music marketer, was responsible for bringing world-class orchestral music to Cleveland with his "Symphony Orchestra Concerts" series.
Since becoming the seventh music director of the Orchestra, Welser-Möst and the Musical Arts Association have extended his contract many times, with the most recent extension keeping him on the podium until 2027. Welser-Möst has been in charge of several residencies, community programming, and growth initiatives for The Cleveland Orchestra throughout his time there. Over the last decade, the Orchestra has maintained its tradition of staging operas and providing live musical accompaniment to various cinema screenings.
The Gala concert marked the Orchestra's 100th anniversary, which Welser-Möst conducted. During an exclusive U.S. broadcast on PBS, he performed at Severance Hall on September 29, 2018, a performance featured on America's leading arts television series, Great Performances.
The Orchestra released the Adella App, a streaming service featuring archival and original programming, in October 2020. Access to the service was free to season members and $35 per month for non-subscribers.
