Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Information
The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is an American pops orchestra that sprang from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1977. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is comprised of the same musicians as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and is run by the same management. Before his untimely death in 2009, Erich Kunzel, the Pops' original conductor, remained at the helm.
In 1965, Erich Kunzel, a young conductor teaching at Brown University, was invited by maestro Max Rudolf to join the Cincinnati Symphony. In October that year, Dartmouth alumnus and Monteux assistant Kunzel led the first "8 O'Clock" Pops concert. For the next four decades, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra played to sold-out crowds at Music Hall and became famous worldwide thanks to their many tours and highly regarded, platinum-selling recordings for the Telarc label.
An estimated 30 million people have seen eight national PBS broadcasts of the Cincinnati Pops. The orchestra has more than 100 recordings available, 56 of which have been on the Billboard charts, more than any other orchestra. After receiving four nominations, the Pops finally won a Grammy in 1998 for their album Copland: Music of America.
