Chris Pureka Information
American acoustic singer and songwriter Chris Pureka identifies as genderqueer. They were raised in Connecticut, started writing songs at eight, and picked up the guitar at sixteen. They quickly started frequently appearing at open mic nights and coffee shops. As budding performers, they assisted Erin McKeown and Pamela Means in opening their performances while finishing their biology degrees at Wesleyan University. After graduating, they began working in a microbiology research lab at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts but soon left to devote themselves entirely to music.
They recorded a seven-song EP with the same name in June 2001 in anticipation of a three-month national tour with lesbian folk poet Alix Olson. The EP was eventually mastered and reissued for the 2005 summer tour. It was recorded at home in two weeks, with Pureka providing background music on the mandolin and bass.
Driving North, Pureka's debut full-length album, was released in 2004 and received overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans and other musicians. They published Dryland in 2006 and went on another headline tour of the US. The CD was featured on the Paste Magazine Sampler in February 2007 and garnered raving reviews. Pureka took part in the month-long New American Songwriter Tour in May 2007 in Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia.
