Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra Information
The Chicago Philharmonic Society governs the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, located in Chicago, Illinois. It is a musician-governed, non-profit organization comprising roughly 200 classical music performers from the Chicago region. It was founded in 1988 by principals of the Lyric Opera Orchestra of Chicago. Scott Speck has been the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor since 2013.
The Orchestra of Illinois was founded in 1979 by the principals of the Lyric Opera Orchestra, and it performed until early 1988 when it fell into financial difficulties. The Orchestral Society of Illinois was founded in June 1988. Its first performance was in March 1991 as "Symphony II," under the direction of Larry Rachleff, who served as the orchestra's artistic director until May 2013.
Since 2012, the Chicago Philharmonic has become the Joffrey Ballet's official orchestra. Since 2016, the orchestra has been a resident company in the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago. It has been a partner with Ravinia Festival for over 20 years. Scott Speck, the Joffrey Ballet's Music Director, was designated Artistic Director and Principal Conductor in 2013.
