Castalian String Quartet Information
Today, the Castalian String Quartet is one of the most talked-about ensembles in the world of chamber music. Since becoming the first Hans Keller String Quartet in Residence at the University of Oxford, they have gained widespread acclaim for performances "full of poetry, joy, and grief, achieved to such perfection" (The Observer).
The quartet's members met in 2011 and studied under Oliver Wille at Hannover's Hochschule für Musik before being chosen in 2016 by the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT). They won first place at the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition in 2015. In 2018 they won the first-ever Merito String Quartet Award, the Valentin Erben Prize, and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, all of which are highly regarded accolades in the classical music world. In 2019, the group won the Young Artist of the Year award at the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards.
Many prestigious venues, such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Paris Philharmonic, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, have hosted recent first performances. The Wigmore Hall in the Castalian String Quartet's hometown of London is where they play frequently. During their next cycle at Wigmore Hall, they plan to play all three of Benjamin Britten's string quartets. Spoleto USA, Aldeburgh, North Norfolk, Cheltenham, East Neuk, Lockenhaus, and Heidelberger Frühling are just a few of the festivals where you may catch the foursome performing. Works by Charlotte Bray, Edmund Finnis, Mark Simpson, Simon Rowland-Jones, and Sir Mark-Anthony Turnage have premiered or will soon do so.
