Carlie Hanson (May 18, 2000) is an American singer and songwriter. Hanson was born and reared in the Wisconsin town of Onalaska. Justin Bieber motivated her to pursue a career as a singer, and at the age of 14, she and a buddy began posting cover songs on YouTube in the hopes of following in Bieber's footsteps.
Hanson was then called by a talent representative, who asked her to audition and record for House of Wolf producers in Toronto. She collaborated with songwriter Dale Anthoni in Los Angeles. Taylor Swift added Hanson's second single, "Only One," to an Apple Music playlist of her favorite songs in November 2017. In March 2018, Hanson released a video for the song, directed by Similar But Different, and included an all-female team. In April 2018, "Only One" received an average of 400,000 daily streams.
Hanson joined Troye Sivan and Kim Petras on Sivan's Bloom Tour in September 2018, performing at locations such as Radio City Music Hall in New York and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Twin Cities Media stated in a review of the Minneapolis show: "She's badass, unapologetic, peppy yet gritty, effortlessly cool, her music is simply banging, and she's a self-made woman. Carlie Hanson is a mix of Lorde and Billie Eilish, with a dash of Kiiara thrown in for good measure."
Hanson supported Yungblud on a series of European gigs in January 2019. In February 2019, she signed with Warner Bros. Records, and in March 2019, she signed with Primary Wave Music. Hanson released "Back in My Arms" on April 26, 2019. Later, it was revealed that the song would be the lead single from her debut extended play, Junk. "WYA," the second single from Junk, was released on May 24, 2019. Taylor Swift added another of Hanson's tracks, "Back in My Arms," to her Apple Music playlist later. On June 7, 2019, the EP, which includes five tracks, was released. She began on The WYA Tour around Europe and the United Kingdom in September 2019.
