Canadian Brass Information
This Canadian brass quintet was created in 1970 in Toronto, Ontario. It was founded by tuba player Charles Daellenbach and trombonist Gene Watts, with horn player Graeme Page, trumpeters Stuart Laughton and Bill Phillips rounding out the quintet.
The Brass initially recorded for the CBC radio transcription service, including their debut big concert in Toronto in the summer of 1971. Major New York City artist management came calling when record producer Eleanor Sniderman found the group and released their first commercial LPs in 1973 and 1974.
The band's trademark garments—formal black suits and white running shoes—embody their rebellious attitude and comedic live performances. They have released over 130 CDs and DVDs and have performed worldwide. Hundreds of transcriptions and original pieces for the brass quintet have been commissioned, played, and recorded by them. The Canadian Brass repertoire includes almost 600 original songs and adaptations.
"One of the most popular brass ensembles in the world" was the quintet's 2015 designation by The Washington Post. Among their many television appearances, they have been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, Hunan TV in China, and every major North American network.
Joe Burgstaller, Ashley Hall-Tighe, Jeff Nelsen, and Achilles Liarmakopoulos are the remaining original ensemble members as of August 2023, except for trumpeter Daellenbach.
