Brooklyn Rider Information
Brooklyn Rider is an American string quartet. The group's current lineup consists of Johnny Gandelsman, Colin Jacobsen, Nicholas Cords, and Michael Nicolas. They're most renowned for performing unique and contemporary repertoire and collaborating with musicians outside of the classical music world. In 2006, the quartet launched the Stillwater Music Festival to showcase new repertories and collaborations; the festival's last performances were in 2015.
Brooklyn Rider has taught at MacPhail Center for the Arts, Texas A&M University, University of North Carolina, Denison University, Dartmouth College, and Williams College. Evenings at the Cologne Philharmonie, American Academy in Rome, Spoleto Festival in the USA, Malmö Festival in Sweden, the Schwartz Center (Atlanta, Georgia), and the Kimmel Center have all been highlights in the past.
NPR named Brooklyn Rider's first album, Passport, one of the greatest classical albums of 2008. Silent City, a joint album with kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor, was released in 2008.
In 2011, American composer Philip Glass picked Brooklyn Rider to record his entire string quartets, including the world premiere recording of his Bent Suite. Seven Steps, their 2012 album, was chosen for NPR's best of 2012 list by listeners.
