Booker T. Jones Information
Booker Taliaferro Jones Jr. (November 12, 1944) is an American arranger, record producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who is best known as the frontman for Booker T. & the M.G.’s. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee. It has been stated that Jones was a child prodigy playing the oboe, double bass, piano, trombone, and saxophone at school. At church, Jones used to play the organ.
Jones entered into the professional music industry at the age of 16, where he played baritone saxophone on Satellite Records. He played the very first hit entitled “Cause I Love You” by Carla and Rufus Thomas. Willie Mitchell also hired Jones for his band, where he began on sax and later moved to bass.
Jones has collaborated with several other artists and released many projects with them such as Priscilla Coolidge (Home Grown and Chronicles), Otis Redding (Pain in My Heart, The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, The Soul Albums), Sheryl Crow (Home for Christmas), Eddie Floyd (Knock on Wood), Willie Nelson (Stardust, Pretty Paper, Without a Song, and Island in the Sea), Rod Stewart (A Night on the Town), William Bell (The Soul of a Bell), Rita Coolidge (Rita Coolidge, The Lady’s Not for Sale, Fall into Spring, It’s Only Love, Anytime… Anywhere, Love Me Again, and Satisfied).
Jones has worked with many record labels, including Atlantic, Stax, Anti-. A&M, MCA, and Epic. His album releases include Evergreen (1974), Try and Love Again (1978), The Best of You (1980), and I Want You (1981).
