Bloomington Symphony Orchestra Information
In the winter of 1969–1970, Geoffrey Simon, a graduate student from Melbourne, Australia, who had moved to Bloomington to study conducting at the Indiana University School of Music, formed the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra.
Concerned about the absence of public performances in Bloomington, Simon approached Wilfred Bain, head of the School of Music, for approval to establish a community symphony orchestra. Since Simon's inception, the orchestra has welcomed all serious musicians, regardless of their profession.
Simon rounded up musicians from all across the area to form the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra; now, its members are not just from Bloomington but also from Carmel, Martinsville, Nashville, Bedford, and Columbus. In particular, violist David McIntosh and bassist Edwin Greenebaum have been with the orchestra since its inception on May 7, 1970.
The inaugural performance featured 56 musicians and occurred at Binford Junior High School. The evening's performances included the overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor by Nikolai, Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev (narrated by David McIntosh), and Saint-Saens' Concerto in A Minor for Cello and Orchestra, performed by Janos Starker's student Christoph Henkel. Haydn's Symphony No. 101 in D was played as the concert's finale.
