Bill Kirchen Information
William Knight “Bill” Kirchen (June 29, 1948) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Bridgeport, Connecticut. Kirchen plays rockabilly, rock and roll, country, country rock, blues, and jazz. Kirchen grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he attended Ann Arbor High School. Soon he joined the local folk scene after meeting folk singer David Siglin, who was a long-time manager of local folk music venue The Ark. Kirchen began a “psycho folk-rock” band while at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Bill switched to a country band that included George Frayne and John Tichy. This group provided the basis of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen band. The group was praised by other outlaw musicians and bands like The Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and the Allman Brothers Band.
Songs like “Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues” and “Mama Hated Diesels” turned out to be the cause of Kirchen’s guitar and vocal fame. Some of Kirchen's other bands include Too Much Fun, a swing orchestra called the Moonlighters, and a few more. During his time in England, Kirchen recorded the album Tombstone Every Mile on Demon Records.
Some of the other notable albums by Kirchen are Have Love, Will Travel (1996), Hot Rod Lincoln Live! (1997), Raise a Ruckus (1999), Tied to the Wheel (2001), Dieselbilly Road Trip (2003), Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods (2006), and Bill Kirchen’s Honky Tonk Holiday (2012). In 2001, Kirchen was inducted into the Washington Area Music Hall of Fame, and he won Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies) in several categories.
