The Berlin Philharmonic is a German orchestra that is based in Berlin. The orchestra was founded in 1882 by 54 musicians under the name Frühere Bilsesche Kapelle that translates to "Former Bilse's Band." Benjamin Bilse was a previous conductor, and Ludwig von Brenner was another. In 1887, Hans von Bülow took the seat of conductor and helped in establishing the orchestra's international reputation. Some of the other conductors throughout the years have been Felix von Weingartner, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Hans Richter, and Edvard Grieg.
The Berlin Philharmonic is regularly ranked as a top orchestra in the world. It is distinguished for its virtuosity and compelling sound. Its history has always been tied to its chief conductors, and many of them were said to be authoritative and controversial. The current principal conductor of the orchestra is Kirill Petrenko. The current managing director of the orchestra is Andrea Zietzschmann.
The Philharmonie, situated on the Bernburger Straße in Berlin Kreuzberg, is the first concert hall for The Berlin Philharmonic inaugurated in 1882. The orchestra also played at the end of the war in the Staatsoper, Unter den Linden, Titania-Palast, Musikhochschule, and a few more locations. The Berliner Philharmonie is the current home of the Berlin Philharmonic. The logo of the orchestra is based on the pentagon-shape of the concert hall.
The Berlin Philharmonic conferred honorary membership to the conductors, including Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Daniel Barenboim, Seiji Ozawa, Mariss Jansons, and Zubin Mehta.
