Beethoven Emperor Concerto Information

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73, also known as the Emperor Concerto in English-speaking nations, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven wrote the concerto in Vienna on a salary in 1809, dedicating it to Archduke Rudolf, his patron, friend, and pupil. Friedrich Schneider performed as a soloist, and Johann Philipp Christian Schulz conducted the Gewandhaus Orchestra for the premiere on November 28, 1811, in Leipzig. Beethoven, the soloist, was unable to perform due to deteriorating hearing.

Military features and symbolism characterize the heroic style of the work. Beethoven experimented with the work, commencing the solo entry without an orchestral introduction, prolonging it, and establishing a new relationship between piano and orchestra. The first of the three movements, Allegro, is in sonata form and lengthier than Beethoven's prior piano concertos' opening movements. Adagio un poco mosso, the second movement, is a nocturne that leads directly into the third movement. Rondo: Allegro ma non troppo, the last movement, is a seven-part rondo. The concerto lasts about forty minutes.

Emperor's origins are unknown; it could have been created by Johann Baptist Cramer, the concerto's English publisher. According to Donald Tovey and Betsy Schwarm, the concerto has no emperor's name, and Beethoven would have despised it because of his opposition to Napoleon's conquest.
