Balanchine Information
Balanchine's mother insisted he audition with his sister Tamara, who shared her interest in ballet, even though the young Balanchine wasn't enthusiastic about it. Andria Balanchivadze, Balanchine's brother, instead continued in his father's footsteps by becoming a composer in Soviet Georgia. Tragically, Tamara was killed while attempting to flee beleaguered Leningrad on a train to Georgia, ending her promising career under mysterious circumstances.
Balanchine moved from his native rural Finland to Saint Petersburg in 1913, at nine, after being admitted to the Imperial Ballet School, the company's primary training facility. He studied under Pavel Gerdt and Samuil Andrianov (Gerdt's son-in-law) there.
Balanchine worked at the Mariinsky Theatre during World War I until its closure in 1917 at the government's order. Since his father wrote music here, the Balanchivadzes found it convenient to take in a ballet performance here. The People's Enlightenment Commissariat now has ownership of this venue. After reopening to the public in 1918, the theater was given its current name, the State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet, in 1920.
