The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra's existence is a tribute to its many players' contributions and the community it serves, having begun in 1932 with a nucleus of determined, dedicated, and talented individuals and growing over decades into the multi-faceted organization it is today. Furthermore, the Orchestra is a symbol of music's ineffable power to promote and make concrete a community's noblest goals and spirit.
Concert music in Bakersfield was mostly limited to churches and, to a lesser extent, the community high school in the early twentieth century. In addition, the opera house hosted occasional touring performers traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco for an evening or two. By 1930, a surprising number of people had opened music studios in their homes, where they taught piano, violin, or voice. The social pages of Bakersfield newspapers were littered with notices proudly proclaiming these services.
The Music Club at Kern County Union High School held a concert series that routinely drew crowds to hear local performers and guest artists from as far away as Los Angeles. The Kern Junior College string quartet, led by violin instructor Allan B. Parker, performed in town and visited the coast and Los Angeles every year.
