Andy Cooney, one of nine children born to a traditional Irish American family on Long Island, New York, began singing Irish songs at a young age under the tutelage of his grandpa, Andy Feehan, who was born in Dublin. He began his professional singing career at age 17, having previously sung at family and religious functions. At 19, in 1986, the famous Irish bandleader Paddy Noonan requested Cooney to tour with his show after seeing him perform at several popular Irish bars in the New York region. Cooney traveled for several years with Noonan, during which time he became widely known across the country for his skills and won the admiration of his listeners.
