Andris Nelsons Information
Andris Nelsons (November 18, 1978) is a Latvian conductor. He was born in Riga, Latvian SSR. Nelsons started on the piano but switched to the trumpet when he was 12. As a bass-baritone, he joined his mother's ensemble and showed a keen interest in the music of the early composers. He attended the Dartington International Summer School under the tutelage of Evelyn Tubb for one summer. At one point, he was a trumpeter for the Latvian National Opera. Nelsons attended master courses with conductors Neeme Järvi, Roberto Carnevale, and Jorma Panula and studied conducting with Alexander Titov in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Early in his career, Nelsons worked in the UK conducting the BBC Philharmonic in-studio performances. In November 2007, he conducted his first concert with the BBC Philharmonic at Bridgewater Hall. Nelsons was appointed the 12th main conductor and music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) in October 2007, beginning with the 2008/09 season with a three-year contract.
To begin his American conducting career, Nelsons filled in for James Levine at Carnegie Hall in March 2011 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Subsequently, in July 2012, he conducted the BSO as a guest conductor at the Tanglewood Music Festival. In January 2013, he debuted with the BSO at Symphony Hall in Boston.
