Andreas Ottensamer Information
Andreas Ottensamer (April 4, 1989) is an Austrian clarinetist. He is also one of the Berlin Philharmonic’s solo clarinetists. Ottensamer, born in Vienna, began his musical studies in 1999 at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he studied piano, violoncello, clarinet with Wolfgang Herzer, and clarinet with clarinet Johann Hindler from 2003. Ottensamer also attended Harvard University in the United States as a student. Ottensamer began his orchestral career as a substitute clarinetist with the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.
Ottensamer was named a fellow of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy in October 2009. He was the solo clarinetist of the German Symphony Orchestra in Berlin from July 2010 to February 2011. He also worked as the solo clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic since March 2011. Tori Amos enlisted Ottensamer’s help on her 2011 album Night of Hunters. In 2013, Ottensamer signed an exclusive recording deal with Mercury Classics, a division of Universal Classics, in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon (DG).
Portraits – The Clarinet Album, Ottensamer’s debut album, was published internationally in June 2013 by Mercury Classics/Deutsche Grammophon and includes concertos by Domenico Cimarosa, George Gershwin, and Aaron Copland. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducted the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
