Andre Rieu Information
Andre Rieu (October 1, 1949) is a Dutch conductor and violinist born in Maastricht, Netherlands. The Maastricht Symphony Orchestra was under the baton of Rieu's father. André, who showed early musical aptitude, started playing the violin when he was five. He always had a deep interest in orchestral music. He studied violin with Jo Juda and Herman Krebbers at the Conservatoire Royal in Liège (1968–1973) and the Conservatorium Maastricht (1968–1973). He attended the Music Academy of Brussels under André Gertler's tutelage from 1974 to 1977.
Sky Arts 2 in the UK was rebranded as Sky Arts Rieu for two weeks in 2013. Sky Arts Rieu aired nonstop Rieu concerts and documentaries between March 30 and April 14, 2013—the film Tuscan Wedding, released in 2014, featured music by Rieu.
Rieu founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987 with a core group of 12 musicians and performed their debut concert on January 1, 1988. As of 2020, he has a band of fifty and sixty players. Rieu's violin is a Stradivarius from 1667. The orchestra has performed worldwide. In 2008, Rieu's tour featured the largest touring stage, a replica of Empress Sisi's Castle.
