American Symphony Orchestra Information

New York's American Symphony Orchestra was created in 1962 by Leopold Stokowski to make symphonic music more approachable and inexpensive to a wide range of listeners. The orchestra is led by Leon Botstein, its music director, and conductor. They regularly appear at New York City venues like Carnegie Hall and Symphony Space.

When Stokowski started the orchestra, he was 80 years old. He was the music director until May 1972, when he returned to England at 90 with his assistant, Amos Meller. The position of music director was held by Kazuyoshi Akiyama from 1973 until 1978 after Maestro Stokowski had left. In the early 1980s, Moshe Atzmon and Giuseppe Patanè were two of the field's most prominent music directors and major conductors. John Mauceri became the music director in 1985.

After Catherine Comet's career with the orchestra ended in 1991, Leon Botstein, then president of Bard College, took over the orchestra's leadership. Many live performances by the American Symphony are now accessible for digital download in addition to the many CDs produced on the Telarc, New World, Bridge, Koch, and Vanguard labels. Some of the rare compositions that have been unearthed in ASO concerts are only available on these recordings.
