London-based English chamber orchestra Academy of St. Martin is in the Fields (ASMF). St. Martin in the Fields' early performances as a string orchestra were pivotal in reviving interest in the Baroque period music in England. There are now wind instruments in the orchestra. Its size and composition can shift to accommodate its wide variety of music, from the Baroque to the present day.
Neville Marriner led the orchestra from the leader's desk on recordings and performed obbligatos and concertino solos with them until 1969. In the fall of 1970, he turned to conducting from the podium. Until he died in 2016, Marriner served as the organization's "Life President." The orchestra has been conducted by such notable names as Iona Brown and Kenneth Sillito, in addition to Marriner on recorded performances.
The Queen's Award for Export Achievement was given to an orchestra for the first time in 1993 and went to the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Murray Perahia has been the orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor since the year 2000, and he has also recorded commercially as both a pianist and conductor with the ensemble at that time. Joshua Bell became the orchestra's second Music Director in May 2011, signing a three-year contract to begin in September of that year.
