The New Amsterdam Theatre is a Broadway theatre that is located in Manhattan, New York City. The venue broke ground in 1902, and it opened for the local public on October 23, 1903. The theatre has a seating capacity of 1702. It is under the ownership of the City of New York and is operated by the Disney Theatrical Group. The architecture of the theatre building is done by Herts & Tallant. The venue served as the home to the Ziegfeld Follies, produced by Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., from 1913 to 1927. The subsequent tenants of the theatre were George White's Scandals and Eva LeGallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre.
In the beginning, the New Amsterdam Theatre was used as a movie theatre. It got closed in 1985 and later leased by The Walt Disney Company. The theatre underwent renovation in 1995-97 to be the flagship for Disney Theatrical Productions presentations. The Art Nouveau interior and the Beaux-Arts exterior are the New York City landmarks designated in 1979. In 1980, the venue was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The theatre is said to be one of the oldest venues of Broadway that survives today.
The New Amsterdam Theatre was deeply affected by the Great Depression. It was closed in 1936 and reopened in 1937 but on a limited basis. A box office record was broken by Aladdin at The New Amsterdam Theatre with a gross of $1,602,785 for the week ending August 10, 2014. The theatre is also known for hosting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS events such as the annual Easter Bonnet Competition.
