The Improv is a franchise of Comedy Club, a single venue founded in 1963 by Budd Friedman. It was originally located in the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. In 1974, a second location was opened at Melrose Avenue in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles, California. Mark Lonow became a general partner, and Budd Friedman ran the Melrose club. He also oversaw the expansion after it was turning into a successful chain.
The Los Angeles Improv became the original site for the A&E Network television series entitled “An Evening at the Improv,” from 1982 until 1996. It was created by Barbara Hosie-O’Daly and O’Daly, produced by Larry O’Daly, whereas Budd Friedman featured as a warm-up host. Since then, many other locations have been opened, such as in Kentucky, Louisville, New Jersey, Atlantic City, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Tampa.
A few historic artists who started their careers on The Improv stage include Jay Leno, Lily Tomlin, Bette Midler, Steve Landesberg, Robert Klein, and Richard Pryor. Almost every big name in the comedy industry has played at an Improv location, including Ron White, Jerry Seinfeld, Joe Rogan, Joan Rivers, Paul Reiser, Freddie Prinze, Liza Minnelli, Larry Miller, Dennis Miller, Steve Martin, Marc Maron, Bill Maher, Jon Lovett, Richard Lewis, David Letterman, Jeff Dunham, Drew Carey, Milton Berle, and Richard Belzer. The majority of the new and upcoming performers have performed at The Improv as well.
