The Gershwin Theatre is a Broadway venue located in midtown-Manhattan in the Paramount Plaza building, NYC. The venue is under the ownership of Paramount Group, and Nederlander Organization operates it. The theatre has a seating capacity of 1,933 and initially opened for the general public on November 28, 1972. Ralph Alswang was the talented architecture of the building. It is designed in a modernist Art Nouveau style. The Gershwin Theatre is named in honor of brothers Ira Gershwin, a lyricist, and George Gershwin, a composer.
The Gershwin Theatre serves as host to large musical productions. Since October 30, 2003, it has also been home to the Tony Award-winning musical Wicked. The venue owns a large orchestra with stadium seating, along with an expansive auditorium that fills the mezzanine. The theatre was previously opened as the Uris Theatre with the musical Via Galactica that starred Raul Julia.
From 1974 to 1976, the Gershwin Theatre served as a concert hall for limited engagements. The site began to host larger musical productions starting from Porgy and Bess in 1976. The theatre also served as the host to the Tony Awards in the following years; 1983, 1984, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1999. Some of the other notable productions at the theatre are The Pirates of Penzance, My Fair Lady, Starlight Express, Riverdance on Broadway, and Oklahoma!
