The stadium is under the ownership of Southern Methodist University and is operated by the same. Doak Walker Plaza is present outside the northeast corner of the stadium, honoring the former Heisman Trophy winner along with SMU's greatest football star. The stadium was inaugurated with a football game against the University of Kansas on September 2, 2000.
Gerald J. Ford Stadium underwent renovations in 2012 when SMU Mustang Athletics announced additional luxury suites and access to designated outdoor seating areas. The entire renovation and construction were completed just before the start of the 2013 season.
