Willy Wonka Jr. Information
Willy Wonka is a musical based on Roald Dahl's 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its 1971 film adaption Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, with music by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, whereas a text by Bricusse and Tim McDonald. Music Theatre International commissioned the musical, now available for amateur theatre groups to perform. Shorter versions of the show, like many MTI licensed shows, are available to license for performing with or for younger age groups.
The one-act "Theatre for Young Audiences" version is designed for a smaller cast of adults to play for younger audiences. It was created at the Kennedy Center's request and premiered there in 2004. It's been described as a "bite-sized" adaptation of the story.
The "Junior" version is similarly a one-act play with a running time of about 60 minutes. Compared to the version for young viewers, it was created with a different set of assumptions about the cast and resources available to filmmakers.
Because school shows may involve entire classes yet have limited financial means, the Junior version was designed to suit the needs of "an ever-expandable and scalable performance" with a budget "equivalent to what a Broadway show would spend on the lead actor's shoes." The children's version is similar to the Junior version, except it is only 30 minutes long and aimed at very young performers, such as elementary school kids.
