Washington National Opera Information
In Washington, D.C., there is an opera group called the Washington National Opera (WNO). Before becoming the National Opera Company, the organization was known as the Opera Society of Washington and the Washington Opera. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts now hosts performances in its Opera House.
After World War I, opera in Washington, DC, was formed, and it did well under the Washington National Opera Association for a while, until the Depression and World War Two years, as well as into the 1960s in various outdoor opera sites. However, the Opera Society of Washington's founding in 1956–1957 paved the path for a company to operate in the city, particularly following the Kennedy Center's completion in 1971 and its relocation there in 1979.
Tenor Plácido Domingo began performing with the organization in 1986 and assumed the position of general director in 1996. He kept this position until June 2011, when the Kennedy Center administration took control of the struggling business.
The company made two announcements in September 2018: the renewal of Zambello's term as artistic director for a further three years, and the immediate appointment of Evan Rogister as its new chief conductor, with a contract initially running until the 2021–2022 season.
