WAMI Award Show Information
The Western Australian Music Industry Awards (WAMI) are annual awards presented to the contemporary music industry. The event is commonly known as WAMIs and is put on by the Western Association Inc (WAM). The award show brings together notable members of the local, national, and international industry to acknowledge music fans and celebrate another year of achievement for Western Australia.
WAM was founded as the Western Australian Rock Music Industry Association Inc (WARMIA), originally in 1985. The main goal was to develop and run annual awards to recognize the music industry’s achievements in Western Australia. WAM received the first project funding in 1989 from the state government. The inaugural Kiss My WAMI Original Contemporary Music Festival was held in 1994. A few other programs have been successfully undertaken, including an annual CD compilation of Western Australian musical artists, Women in Rock, the WA Song Contest, and the Act of Youth series of all-ages shows.
The first commencement of the WAMI Awards took place with an opening party on September 13, 2001, and the closing party was held at the Globe Theatre on September 16, 2001. Several award categories are presented during the awards, such as Golden WAMI, Most Popular Local Original Recorded Release, Most Popular Original Song, and Most Popular Venue for Local Original Music.
