The Whos Tommy Information
Pete Townshend composed the music and lyrics for the rock musical The Who's Tommy, and he co-wrote the book with Des McAnuff. The Who's 1969 rock opera Tommy served as inspiration for it. On July 1, 1992, the musical premiered in San Diego, California's La Jolla Playhouse. Beginning on March 29, 1993, with 27 preview performances continuing through April 10, 1993, the show had its Broadway debut at the St. James Theatre. Following its formal opening night on April 22, 1993, the musical ran for 899 performances before closing on June 17, 1995.
On April 24, 2019, a limited engagement premiered at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Christian Borle played Captain Walker, Mandy Gonzalez was Mrs. Walker, and Casey Cott was Tommy in the play. The show continued till April 29, 2019. In 2023, under McAnuff's direction, a revival of the musical celebrating its 30th anniversary debuted in Chicago, Illinois's Goodman Theatre.
Some changes were made to the script for this production, such as removing "Tommy's Holiday Camp" and rewriting the lyrics of "We're Not Gonna Take It." The news of the production's transfer to the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway was announced on October 26, 2023. Opening night is set for March 28, 2024.
