The Threepenny Opera Information
The Threepenny Opera is a German musical by Bertolt Brecht that was adapted from a translation by Elisabeth Hauptmann of 18th-century John Gay’s English ballad opera entitled, The Beggar’s Opera as four ballads by Villon. Kurt Weill produced the music of the play. The play opened on August 31, 1928, at Berlin’s Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. Some of the most notable songs are “Seerauberjenny” (“Pirate Jenny”) and “Die Moritat von Mackie Messer” (“The Ballad of Mack the Knife”).
The Threepenny Opera made its first stage appearance in the United Kingdom on February 9, 1956. It was produced under Berthold Goldschimdt. In the United States, the play was introduced by the film version of G. W. Pabst, which opened in New York in 1931. The first English adaptation of the American production was given by Jerrold Krimsky and Gifford Cochran, whereas staged by Francesco von Mendelssohn. It featured Robert Chisholm as Macheath. The show made its Broadway debut at the Empire Theatre on April 13, 1933.
BBC Radio 3 and BBC Philharmonic collaborated in 2009 and broadcasted a complete radio production of the Michael Feingold translation. Nadia Molinari directed it, and BBC Philharmonic performed the music.
