Roger Bean wrote the book for The Marvelous Wonderettes, a jukebox musical comedy. The show pays homage to the 1950s high school Songleader squads by using classic songs from the 1950s and 1960s to convey its story. When Springfield High Songleaders Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy are asked to perform at their senior prom as a last-minute replacement, they band together to thrill their classmates in four-part harmony. The second act depicts the four at a high school reunion ten years later.
Bean was requested to compose a new musical for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater's intimate black box location, the Stackner Cabaret, in 1998, coming after a run of his debut musical, Don't Touch That Dial! Bean proposed a musical about best friends who were high school song leaders in the 1950s and 1960s who sang at prom for their best friends and partners. To tell the characters' story, he would employ pop songs from the 1950s and 1960s. The Marvelous Wonderettes were born in this fashion in 1999.
Bean had to produce a script that allowed the actors to stay on stage for the show's majority, if not all, due to a lack of backstage space. As a result, The Marvelous Wonderettes' original one-act version was born. It has evolved from a considerably basic one-act format to its current, fully developed two-act version throughout the years.
