Sondheim on Sondheim is a musical revue based on the book by James Lapine. Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and the musical’s lyrics while James Lapine conceived and directed the musical. Sondheim on Sondheim had a limited run in 2010 on Broadway. Some other productions include 2012 Cleveland, 2014 Australia, 2015 San Diego, and 2018 San Jose. The revue is based on “Moving On,” a show produced in 2000 and devised by David Kernan featuring some narrations that Sondheim recorded.
The Roundabout Theatre presented Sondheim on Sondheim at its Broadway venue, Studio 54. The official opening took place on April 22, 2010, and closed on June 27, 2010. Vanessa L. Williams, Leslie Kritzer, Erin Mackey, Barbara Cook, Tom Wopat, Norm Lewis, Euan Morton, and Matthew Scott are some of the original Broadway cast members. The songs included in the show are from nineteen Sondheim shows which include some student productions. Some of the notable examples are A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, West Side Story, Company, Follies, Sunday in the Park with George, Merrily We Roll Along, and Passion.
On August 31, 2010, the original cast recording of the musical was released. The musical revue earned 2 Drama League Awards and 1 Drama Desk Award, and a Grammy nomination in 2011.
