Joy Wood Jr. began his career as a stand-up comedian in 1998, opening for comedy veteran Tommy Davidson. Early in the 2000s, he launched three prank-call CDs: My Momma Made Me Wear This (2003), Confessions of a Bench Warmer (2005), and I'll Slap You Into Sleep (2007). Roy started standing up in 2003 and advanced to Star Search's blockbuster series semi-finals.
Roy Wood Jr. also ranked third in the Last Comic Standing in 2010, earning more nationwide respect. The same year, he started doing a morning show called The Roy Wood Jr. Show, which the Alabama Broadcasters Association awarded the Large Market Morning Show of the Year for several years. Roy was among the 12 Rising Stars in Comedy by Entertainment Weekly in 2008. 2013 saw the release of his first comedy CD, Things I Think, I Think.
Roy was approached to anchor Comedy Central's This is Not Happening series after his first stand-up special, Father Figure, debuted on Comedy Central in 2017 and became very popular. Rising to fame, Roy Wood Jr. appeared on Conan, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and The Late Show with David Letterman. In 2019, he debuted Roy Wood Jr.: No One Loves You, his second Comedy Central special.
