Rigoletto Information
Giuseppe Verdi composed the three-act opera Rigoletto. Adapted from Victor Hugo's 1832 comedy Le roi s'amuse, the Italian libretto was penned by Francesco Maria Piave. The opera was premised successfully at La Fenice in Venice on March 11, 1851, despite initial difficulties with the Austrian censors who controlled northern Italian theaters. The original setting has been drastically altered in several recent versions.
Jonathan Miller's 1982 English National Opera production takes place amidst the Mafia in Little Italy in New York City during the 1950s; Doris Dörrie's 2005 Bavarian State Opera production transformed the Court of Mantua into The Planet of the Apes; director Linda Brovsky's 2004 Seattle Opera production (repeated in 2014) sets the story in Mussolini's fascist Italy; and Michael Mayer's 2013 Metropolitan Opera production takes place in a Las Vegas casino in the 1960s.
Several characters take on Rat Pack stereotypes; for example, Rigoletto becomes Don Rickles, and the Duke becomes Frank Sinatra. The opera, which took place amid the social circles of the infamous ex-prime minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, was presented in March 2014 by Lindy Hume, creative director of Opera Queensland in Australia.
