The Prodigal Son is a dramatic re-narration play written by Norwegian author and philosopher Peter Wessel Zapffe (1899–1990). It is a dramatized representation of the life of Jesus, who is named Emmanuel in Zapffe's play written in 1951.
According to Zapffe's assertion, Jesus, like most of the people in the past and present, misinterpreted the actual meaning of what it is to be human on earth. Indicating he intentionally solicited the betrayal himself to fulfil the Messianic prophecies.
The central character in The Prodigal Son is Judas, Jesus' closest friend from childhood. Zapffe explains in the foreword that the dramatic character of the material that he gathered made him believe that a play was his best solution.
