Philadanco Information
Philadanco, or The Philadelphia Dance Company, is a professional dance company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, specializing in contemporary dance. One of the Artistic Directors, Joan Myers Brown, founded the organization in 1970. The company caters to both national and international tours. Their regular local appearances are held at the Painted Bride Art Center, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and at a few other Philadelphia venues.
The tour schedule of the Philadanco is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Arts Touring Program and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Programs that are conducted by the Philadanco are divided into four main components that are the Summer Training Program, Instruction and Training Program, D/2 Apprentice Company, and the professional company.
Philadanco provides several performances throughout the year via international and domestic tours. The dance company established the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD). The organization’s primary purpose was to allow the black dance community to establish collaborations with the other dance communities, address common issues, and pool their resources.
