Opera Philadelphia Information
In 1975, the Philadelphia Lyric Opera Company (PLOC) and the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company (PGOC), which had been rivals for decades, merged to form the present-day Opera Company of Philadelphia. A leader of the PLOC for many years, Adele W. Paxson, was also the first female president of the board of directors for the business. Max Leon, the PGOC's conductor and general manager, and Carl Suppa, the PGOC's first creative director, took on those roles, respectively.
The merger resulted from extensive coordination and preparation by all three people. The company's global premiere of The Hero by Gian Carlo Menotti occurred that year. Leon and Suppa departed the company at the close of the 1977–1978 season. Therefore, J. Edward Corn was named the company's second general manager, and then Julius Rudel was hired on as a consultant for his creative expertise.
Corn departed the firm in 1980 to head the NEA's new opera and musical theater program. Since 1977, Margaret Anne Everett has been the OCP's head of educational and community services. In May of this year, she was promoted to acting manager and then general manager, making her the organization's third leader. She stayed in that role for a total of fourteen years.
