In the first installment of a series of talks given by eminent scientists and explorers, John Wesley Powell discussed the physical geography of the USA at the Society's invitation. Even though the speaker series has been around for over a hundred years, it still draws in renowned explorers and conservationists like Damien Mander, who founded the International Anti-Poaching Foundation. Most lecturers they invite give many sessions; the most prolific, Egyptologist Kara Cooney, gave forty or more talks.
They have also invited wildlife photographer and National Geographic Society member Steve Winter to give talks. Picture of the Year International has presented Winter with the prestigious Global Vision Award twice. With the help of regional arts organizations, National Geographic Live! hosts about 300 performances yearly.
