Mike Birbiglia (June 20, 1978) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, speaker, director, producer, and writer. With many comedy albums and specials, he regularly contributes to podcasts like This American Life and The Moth. Based on his one-person show of the same name, Sleepwalk with Me (2012), where he also starred, won honors at the Sundance and Nantucket film festivals. It was his first feature-length directing effort.
Birbiglia's 2008 off-Broadway production at the Bleecker Street Theatre, Sleepwalk with Me, was a stand-up comedy and theater hybrid. The evening, hosted by Nathan Lane, was hailed as "simply perfect" by The New York Times. In 2009, it was selected "Show of the Year" by Time Out New York.
Both the book Sleepwalk with Me and Other Painfully True Stories (2010) and the CD Sleepwalk With Me Live (2011) were based on works by Birbiglia. In its first week of publication, the book reached number four in the Washington Post's hardcover nonfiction list and number 29 on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction bestseller list.
The New One, Birbiglia's most recent production, will be touring in April 2017. The tour began in December 2017 with 25 stops and included a special podcast called The Old Ones.
The Old Man and the Pool, Birbiglia's 2022 stage production, had its world debut on April 28 and lasted through May 22 at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Afterward, he presided over the Broadway production from November 13, 2022, to January 15, 2023, at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre.
