Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG), founded in 1980 in New York City by artistic director and choreographer Mark Morris, has been hailed as one of the most important contemporary dance companies of our era (Yo-Yo Ma), with its performers receiving high praise for their technical aplomb, musicality, and pure human authenticity.? ?Bloomberg Businessweek.
The Dance Group, which has toured with its musicians, the MMDG Music Ensemble, since 1996, places a high priority on live music and community involvement. While on tour abroad and at home at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, NY, the Dance Group offers educational opportunities in dance and music to people of all ages and abilities through Access/MMDG programming.
The 1996-founded MMDG Music Ensemble is an essential part of the Dance Group. The Ensemble's repertoire includes pieces by John Wilson and Henry Purcell from the 17th and 18th centuries and more contemporary compositions by Ethan Iverson, Lou Harrison, and Henry Cowell. The musicians participate in the Dance Group's educational and outreach initiatives at home and abroad. Colin Fowler, who started working with MMDG in 2005 while creating Mozart Dances, is the director of the music ensemble.
