Manual Cinema Information
Manual Cinema is an American Emmy Award-winning performance collective, film/video Production Company, and design studio. It was founded by Drew Dir, Kyle Vegter, Julia Miller, Ben Kaufmann, and Sarah Fornace in 2010. The company combines innovative sound and music, cinematic techniques, and handmade shadow puppetry to create immersive stories for both screen and stage. Manual Cinema presents vintage-style overhead projectors, puppets, actors, live feed cameras, multi-channel sound design, multiple-screens, and a live music ensemble.
Manual Cinema transforms the normal experience of attending a cinema by filling it with theatricality, ingenuity, and liveness. They were awarded an Emmy Award in 2017 for a video created for The New York Times, “The Forger.”. It was also named Chicago Artists of the Year in 2018 by the Chicago Tribute. In September 2020, the shadow puppet animations were featured in the film remake of “Candyman.” It was directed and produced by Monkey Productions of Jordan Peele.
The Manual Cinema has created nine feature-length live multimedia theater shows to date: Frankenstein, No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks, The Magic City, My Soul’s Shadow, Mementos Mori, Fjords, ADA/AVA, and Lula del Ray. The company has collaborated with The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Saudi Arabia), Theatre World Festival Brno (Czechia), The Avignon Off Festival (France), Adelaide Festival (Australia), Underbelly (United Kingdom), Brooklyn Academy of Music (New York City), La Monnaie-De Munt (Brussels), The Tehran International Puppet Festival (Iran), and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City).
